Sleep Apnea and Alzheimer's
Is There a Link Between Sleep Apnea and Alzheimer’s?
Emerging Research on Sleep Apnea and Alzheimer’s
At Volusia Sleep and Snore, we keep a close eye on new research that may impact the health of our patients. A recent study adds to growing evidence that sleep apnea may be linked to Alzheimer’s disease—specifically through a protein called amyloid-beta, which is closely associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s.
Understanding the Connection
The study, published in the *American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine*, evaluated over 200 healthy individuals between the ages of 55 and 90. Participants were tested for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and had their cerebrospinal fluid analyzed for amyloid-beta levels. The findings revealed that those with more severe sleep apnea had higher levels of this Alzheimer’s-related protein.
What Does This Mean for You?
Although researchers haven’t confirmed a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the findings are significant. They suggest that changes in sleep patterns and increased amyloid levels might appear long before Alzheimer’s symptoms become noticeable. Treating OSA early could potentially reduce or delay these changes—leading to improved cognitive health over time.
Why It Matters
Sleep apnea isn’t just about snoring or poor sleep—it may also affect your brain’s long-term health. As more evidence emerges, it’s increasingly clear that managing sleep apnea could play a role in preventing or slowing cognitive decline.
What You Can Do
If you or someone you love snores, wakes up gasping for air, or struggles with daytime fatigue, it’s time to talk to a sleep-trained provider. Volusia Sleep and Snore offers convenient at-home testing and effective treatment options—including oral appliance therapy—to help protect both your rest and your brain health.
Stay Informed, Stay Proactive
This study is one of many highlighting the broader health implications of untreated sleep apnea. We encourage our patients to stay informed and proactive about their sleep health. Screening and treating OSA could not only improve daily life but also reduce risks tied to long-term cognitive decline.
